I must say that this weekend was one of the most beautiful weekends I've had in a long time.... I somewhat waited for the snow to melt because my intention was to do the project again with the feathers but without the snow... There were more people than usual in the neighbourhood; and while I collected little pieces of wood I felt people watching me. I felt a bit disturbed at the beginning, but at the end I just turned up the volume on my mp3 player and pretended that they weren't there.

I'm planning to return to the same area next weekend with the feathers, but to finish everything off I want to release the feathers to the pond... and document it with video.

Project #1 - Feathers
This was a tricky project as I needed to wait for a day with the least wind possible. I chose to use feathers because it signified the ducks that were no longer "allowed" at the pond, and to me they were aesthetically forgiving and beautiful. When I first got to the pond I realized that they were either setting up or putting down everything for the Winter Carnival, and for that reason there were tons of fences around the pond (those ugly orange ones) to deter people from either jumping/falling into the pond. They also had a dozen of signs that said: "DANGER. THIN ICE". There were sparing areas without signs or orange fences, so I decided to use a small little area by the back where the ducks used to play.

The first hour I spent just walking around the pond, and watching the workers trying to dig out the sheets of ice that covered the walkway. I was lucky though, because it was just above zero degrees, so it was warm enough for me to wander around the park for a long time.

The first piece was more structured than the second one. As I worked on the first one I cared a lot about how it looked, and why it was there, and what others were thinking while they passed by (why is that Chinese girl taking pictures on the ground...?). None of that seemed to matter when I got to the second piece. I was in some sort of "zen" state. Nothing bothered me anymore. I put down my bag on the snow and took pictures incessantly. It was as if something took over, and I felt a strange but comforting connection to nature, and to what I was doing. I suddenly became so involved. My fingers grew pink and numb from the snow, but for some reason that didn't stop me from continuing. What did stop me though; was a phone call from my mother who was actually waiting for me to pick her up for the last 30 minutes.

Until next time...
